Gardner: Jamaica IS still the best
Current
captain Ricardo Gardner was a young member of the only Jamaica
side ever to reach a FIFA World Cup™ finals, back in France in
1998. Since then, however, the 58-time-capped Bolton Wanderers
utility man has seen the Reggae Boyz sink to 105th in the
world and miss out on recent instalments of the Caribbean Cup
and the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Speaking exclusively to
FIFA.com, 'Bibi', now approaching 30, chats about why he
thinks Jamaica are still the best team in the Caribbean, the
triumphant return of Brazilian maestro Rene Simoes to the
touchline, and his high hopes for his country reaching South
Africa 2010. Currently in camp outside of Kingston in
preparation for their qualifying opener on 14 June, Gardner
points to a "positive vibe" in the Jamaican side.
FIFA.com: Ricardo, after
missing out on the finals of the most recent Caribbean Cup and
the CONCACAF Gold Cup, does Jamaica have something to prove
heading into South Africa 2010 qualifying?
Ricardo Gardner: It's been a
tough couple of years of us, but I wouldn't really call it a
crisis or anything like that. We are a good team and we have
some very good players. On the balance of the talent we have
in the side, I don't see too many teams in the region who will
be able to beat us.
Are Jamaica still the best
team in the Caribbean?
We've been getting a challenge
from some of the other teams in the Caribbean of late, like
Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. But I still think that if you
look down the line at the players we have and the talent we
produce consistently, we are still the best footballing nation
in the Caribbean.
First up in the qualifiers you
will face Bahamas. As you are heavy favourites to win the
series does that add a dimension of extra pressure? We will go
into the game with the Bahamas as if they are the USA or
Mexico - it's no different. Anything can happen and if we are
not ready to go, the Bahamas can jump all over us and give us
a hard time. Right now the vibe in our camp is good and our
spirits are high [the Jamaicans are unbeaten in their last
three friendlies]. We have a job to do and we are going to go
out and do it.
How important is the return
of former head coach Rene Simoes to the side as the qualifiers
for South Africa approach?
Having Simoes back [he replaced
Bora Milutinovic who was sacked late last year] to lead the
team is a special thing. He is a legend in Jamaica and the
players really respond to his way of working. Bringing him
back was a great move by the FA and only good things can come
from it.
And it will be a reunion for
you as well...
Yeah, I played under him at the
World Cup finals in 1998. I'm thrilled to have him back and I
know he is the man to get us back to the World Cup, this time
in South Africa.
As captain, how much
motivation do you think you'll need to offer up to your
team-mates?
When you're the captain the
rest of the players are always going to look up to you. But,
like I said, the vibe in the camp is very positive at the
moment so I don't think I'll need to do too much motivating.
We are all ready to go.
You have been with Bolton
Wanderers in the English Premier League since 1998 and seen
some very good years. This season, you just avoided relegation
at the wire...
It was a hard year for us, but
we dug deep and showed our spirit and fight in the end. In the
last four games everyone showed what they were made of and
ground out the results we needed. It was a huge relief. Next
season we'll just need to start fresh and get back to the
things that we do well as a team.
Your role for Bolton is
usually a defensive one, but it seems you get the chance to
play a bit of football in the middle for Jamaica...
It's all up to the boss really
where I line up, but I love to play football. In the back or
in the middle, with the ball or without, I will be happy to be
out representing my country and working toward getting us to
the World Cup.
What would it mean to the
people of Jamaica if you were able to reach the finals again?
Trust me; the words do not
exist to describe what it would mean for the Jamaican people
if we were to get back into the World Cup finals. It means so
much to everyone in the country, Jamaicans living off the
island too. The country is going through some hard times at
the moment and it would be a great gift for us to give to the
people. We are all ready to do our part.
And for you personally...
Yeah, for me it would be a
chance to get back to the finals ten years after the first
time. I am a more mature player now and it would be a dream
come true.
It seems like there is a
special passion for football in Jamaica. Why is this?
Football lives in Jamaica. From
when we are all very young the game is everywhere... on the
TV, in the streets, in the conversations. There is a special
connection between our island and the game of football.

KEY ROUND 7 CLASH
ROUND 7 SCHEDULE SUNDAY, MAY 18
KSAMLA wish to assure its
Affiliates, friends, and well wishers that there are five
double-headers and a lone game on in this Sunday, May 18 Round
7 of the NCB 24 Hour Top-Up Masters League.
No doubt you are aware of the
incident of indiscipline that marred a fine masters league
game at the Constant Spring Oval last Sunday. In a game
described by many onlookers as a wonderful display of
efficient masters football, Constant Spring held on to win 2-1
over the 2008 league favorites, Pelicans. Unfortunately, the
Manager and Coach of Pelicans reportedly verbally and
physically abused the game officials.
After a review of the Referee's
report, the Match Inspector's report, and the report of the
registered Pelicans Manager, KSAMLA expelled Pelicans from the
League for bringing the game into disrepute, and also
suspended them from competition in 2009. The Manager and the
Coach of Pelicans were both referred to the KSAMLA
Disciplinary Committee for further action.
We wish to remind the
participating Affiliates that each team involved in a game
must have two (2) clearly identifiable officials at that game
to assist the game officials with matters of the security of
the game.
KSAMLA take this opportunity to
reiterate that affiliated teams participating in the NCB 24
Hour Top-Up Masters League are responsible for the conduct and
behavior of their officials, players, and supporters. And, in
accordance with KSAMLA's policy of zero-tolerance to acts of
indiscipline and physical violence against game officials by
players, team officials, and team supporters, affiliated teams
who fail to shoulder this very important responsibility will
invariably be suspended, forthwith, from all KSAMLA
competitions, and will not be invited to any subsequent
edition of the League until the Executive Committee sees fit.

Fabian
Taylor scores his first Hattrick for Notodden FK, in
Norway.
 |
|
Fabian
Taylor |
Reggae Boy and on loan, Harbour
View striker Fabian Taylor announced himself at his new
club impressively by scoring a hattrick to lead
his team to a whopping 5-0 against Sandefjord FK in his
fifth league appearance.
Goals scored in minutes 8,30
and 80 assisted his team to register their second victory this
season after a slow start but with the prolific striker
hitting a hattrick the hopes are high that the Jamaican will
help to steadily propel his team up the tables from their
current mid-table position.
He quickly joins the
leading goalscorers after acclimatising to the cold conditions
when he arrived just about a month ago in heavy snow and has
gradually bonded with the squad before registering his first
goal with the reserves two weeks ago.
"It has been coming but I am
really happy to finally clinch that first one, that
fortunately developed into three. I will continue to
work hard and hopefully will score more goals" said Fabian
after the game.

Harbour View topped the U-21
standings with an impressive record of 14-4-3 while conceding
only thirteen goals. The champions' leading goal scorer, Andre
Fagan, with eight goals to his tally, is joint-second to
Jahmali Spence of Waterhouse who leads with 16 goals. The HVFC
talented U-21 squad produced two Jamaica senior team
representatives in goalkeeper Dwayne Miller, and left-full
back, Lance Laing, while skipper, Montrose Phinn, made a
smooth transition to the Harbour View premier league team.
In other games on this Friday,
Waterhouse journey to the UWI Bowl to play last placed August
Town at 3:30 pm in a game that presents a great opportunity
for Jahmali Spence to cement his hold on the 2008 Coca-Cola
U-21 Golden Boot title. At Jarrett Park, Seba United host
Sporting Central at 3:30 pm, Village United welcome Boy's Town
at the Elliston Wakeland Center at 3:30 pm, and St. George's
are at home to Tivoli Gardens at Lynch Park at 3:30 pm.
Although Harbour View and
Portmore United have already been declared champions and
runners-up, respectively, there is a hot race on for third
place between St. Georges, Tivoli Gardens, Waterhouse, and
Sporting Central. A win for either St. George's or Tivoli
Gardens in their crucial Lynch Park clash will secure the
third spot for the winner, while a draw will hand the third
place to Waterhouse who are expected to swamp August Town at
the UWI Bowl.
Sporting Central will be going
all out for a win against Seba United, and praying for a draw
between STGC and Tivoli, while also depending on August Town
to hold or beat Waterhouse to hand Sporting the coveted third
place over St. George's under the head-to-head competition
rule. In their last encounters, Waterhouse were held to a 1-1
draw by August Town, Tivoli Gardens beat St. George's 2-1, and
Sporting Central easily defeated Seba 3-0.
Entry to the grand championship
presentation double-header and Stone Love after-party at the
Harbour View stadium is free.

Fourth Round starts with two drawn games under new Coach,
Harold Thomas!
 |
|
Coach Harold
Thomas |
The sudden exit of Coach,
Lennie Hyde was replaced by his assistant Harold Thomas as the
season approaches the fourth and newly designed final Round of
five high intensity games.
A variation to the former
straight league format was modified to reflect a similar style
as the one used in the Scottish Premier League where after
each of the twelve Clubs play a round robin schedule against
each other the top six Clubs are separated from the other six
in two zones to result in a winner and then the two relegated
Clubs.
Harbour View FC finished in
fourth position on 46 points after three rounds behind leaders
Portmore United 64 points, second placed Tivoli Gardens on 59
points and Boy's Town third on 50 points. Waterhouse fifth on
44 points and newly promoted Sporting Central marginally
qualified with superior head to head results over Village
United and St. George's SC after all three Clubs ended on 39
points.
Seba United, on 38 points were
followed by Arnett Gardens on 33 points along with August Town
and Reno FC completes the slate on 32 points.
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008
at Drewsland.
HVFC 1 WATERHOUSE 1.
The hotly contested game was
not without intensity and a will to win on both sides but no
goals resulted until the electrically charged last ten minutes
when two penalties were awarded.
Firstly Waterhouse gleefully
accepted a gift of a penalty as the forward leaped into the
air as goalkeeper, Dwayne Miller advanced to intercept.
The greater surprise followed
when a penalty was awarded and Miller cautioned as Vincent
Earle scored to acquire the lead after 82 minutes.
Substitue Rafiek Thomases shot
goalward was cearly handled by defender Roger Rodney about the
penalty spot as Thomas calmly converted in time added on to
level the scores 1-1.
Sunday, April 27th, 2008 at
Ferdie Neita Park.
HVFC 1 PORTMORE UNITED 1.
Jermaine Hue's blast from just
inside the penalty area left goalkeeper, Shawn Sawyers
stranded as the "Stars of the East" took the lead in an
intreaging tactical contest.
Steven Morrisey responded in
the 33rd minute after he skillfully snuck in between the
defenders and the advancing Under 21 goalkeeper, Leon Goffe to
place the ball in the corner pocket and equalize.
Many more attacks were traded
both sides but failed to alter the scoreline.
On Wednesday, Harbour travels
again to Tivoli Gardens.

HARBOUR VIEW POISED FOR CHAMPIONSHIP HONOURS
 |
|
Harbour View
U-21 captain, Montrose Phinn is a regular figure in the
Harbour View National Premier League team. |
With just two round of games
left in the Coca-Cola National U-21 Premier League, Harbour
View are poised to lift the championship crown from Portmore
United as they need only a draw from their two remaining games
against Tivoli Gardens and Arnett Gardens, respectively, to
snatch the title. The Stars of the East are six points clear
at the top of the standing and are playing very well at the
moment.
On Friday, Harbour View journey
to the Edward Seaga Stadium to tackle Tivoli Gardens at 5:00
pm, and can clinch the title there with a win or a draw. In
their first round meeting, HVFC defeated Tivoli Gardens 2-1 at
the Compound.
U-21
Standings
Portmore United squandered
their chance to retain the U-21 title last week when they
failed to breach the strong Harbour View defense at home after
the rivals played to a pulsating 0-0 draw. This Friday,
Portmore United is away to Arnett Gardens at the Tony
Spaulding Complex (5:00 pm) and should have little difficulty
taking all three points based on their current form.
Interestingly, Arnett Gardens spanked Portmore United 2-1 in
the champions own back-yard in the first round.
Boy's Town host third place St.
George's at Collie Smith Drive at 3:30 pm, and will try to
avenge the 1-0 lost they suffered at Lynch Park in the first
round at the hands of STGC.

Sixth place Sporting Central
Academy await bottom-of-the-table August Town at Brancourt at
3:30 pm, and an expected win can push Sporting up the standing
to third place should St. George's lose to the Red Brigade.
Sporting edged August Town 2-1 in the first round.
Reno meets Seba United at Frome
at 3:30 pm, and will try complete the sweep having tagged Seba
1-0 in their first round encounter.
The once red-hot Waterhouse
welcome Village United at the Drewsland Stadium at 4:00 pm.
After looking like title contenders a few rounds back,
Waterhouse fizzled to fifth in the tables, and a loss to
Village United on Friday could see them slipping even further
down the standings. Waterhouse were held to a 0-0 draw in the
first round.
In the golden boot race,
Waterhouse's Jahmali Spence still leads the pack with 12
goals, but Andre Fagan of Harbour View is second with 8 goals
and can make a race of it. Both Craig Hunter of Arnett
Gardens, and Levaughn Williams of Sporting Central are third
with 7 goals each.
Coca-Cola U-21 Schedule, Friday April 25
In last Friday's games, St.
George's stopped Waterhouse 3-2, Seba United and Arnett
Gardens played to a 2-2 draw. Heron Streete scored a brace for
Seba United. Reno swamped August Town 4-1 on a double by Evan
Taylor, Sporting Central easily tagged Village United 4-1,
Tivoli Gardens shutout Boy's Town 2-0, and Harbour View and
Portmore played to a goal-less draw.

UWI PELICANS WIN 2008 PETER CARGILL MEMORIAL GAMES
 |
|
Avril Cargill, the widow of deceased national player and
national coach, Peter Cargill, walks through the guard-of-honour
prepared for her by the players of both the UWI Pelicans
and the Peter Cargill XI at the 2008 Cargill Memorial Game
held at the Harbour View stadium on Saturday, April 19.
|
UWI Pelicans were crowned
champions of the 2008 Peter Cargill Memorial Games at the
Harbour View stadium on Saturday. The Pelicans lifted the
title after a polished and impressive undefeated performance
which saw them scoring an easy 3-0 win over host Harbour View
masters, and a hard fought 1-0 extra-time victory over a
talent- laced Peter Cargill XI that comprised a combined team
of Camperdown and Waterhouse players. Coach Cargill was a past
student of Camperdown High, and was the coach of Waterhouse
national premier league team at his untimely death in 2005.
Ambassador AB Stewart
Stephenson, the President of the Kingston and St. Andrew
Football Association (KSAFA), accompanied by Mrs. Cynthia
Warren-Cooke, the Principal of Camperdown High School, Ian
McNaughton, the president of the Kingston and St. Andrew
Masters Football League Association (KSAMLA), and also by
Peter Hibbert, the President of Waterhouse FC, got the 2008
Cargill Games underway by greeting the teams before the
opening game between Harbour View masters and the Peter
Cargill XI.
