THE HARBOUR VIEW
FOOTBALL CLUB
celebrates it's
30th Anniversary (March 4th,1974)
all season long 2003- 2004.
Since the days when
the eager citizens of Harbour View grouped together
at the Harbour View Primary School halls to meet
and greet each other all around The love of football
mostly then at the Minor League Under 16 years
level before taking the conscious decision to enter
the Major League in September 1974 after electing
officers in the newly formed Harbour View Football Club
previously named after the community only – Harbour View.
HARBOUR
VIEW FAILS AGAIN AFTER TAKING THE LEAD !!
Tivoli
Gardens overpowers opponents in second half blitz.
Fabian Taylor’s early (7th
minute) strike was cancelled out by two second half stunners
from Christopher Nicholas after he entered the frey to convert
immediately from the penalty spot in minute 55 then a
controlled finish eight minutes later from the top of the box
to seal a victory that was marred by poor officiating as the
Tivoli team was clearly instructed to be as brutal as possible
in order to secure a victory.
The Ian ‘Pepe’ Goodison
straight right punch to the jaw of Fabian Taylor had him
stretchered off after fifteen minutes without any word, let
alone action from the incompetent officials, this was followed
up by continuous fouls on Jermaine Hue who was spared only by
the inability of the offender Marvin Morgan as he eventually
hurt himself in his last desperate attempt in tumbling over
Hue when pushing him off the field infront of his own bench
and for his final effort he belatedly received a yellow card
in minute 73. 18 year old Luton Shelton was targeted by hitmen
all afternoon and was finally injured in minute 78 when he
tried to score from a melee being kicked after the whistle was
blown, again no action against the offender but a yellow card
shown to Shelton for stepping, he now misses the Jamaica’s
Olympic Squad two match tour of Fort Lauderdale with a swollen
knee. The medical staff hands were filled to capacity with a
hamstring injury to Sean Fraser and bruising to young Lovell
Palmer.
In the end a competitive game
(2-1) spoilt by referee Raymond Pyne.
VILLAGE UNITED UPSET LEADERS HARBOUR VIEW BY 3-2 AT HOME.
A
goalscoring blitz of three goals within eight minutes left the
overall league leaders Harbour View wondering what went wrong
as the three substitutes for Village left their mark on the
proceedings that had Harbour View clearly in front by 2-0
after eighty minutes in the game.
Was it the change of captain
Jermaine Hue, the three replacing attackers for Harbour View
not making as much of an impact as their opponents
substitution (I hardly think so), or maybe the obvious
defensive lapses that has plagued the team from time to time
over the last few seasons, well whatever the coaching staff
unearths later, will not soothe the horrow of defeat inflicted
on all Harbour View well wishers worldwide Sunday afternoon as
the New Year approaches the resolution that such a spectacle
would never repeat itself ever.
The Village United team
exhibited fitness and good teamplay in the initial stages of
the game but the
smooth passing game of Harbour View soon took over leading to
Craig Stewart rounding a defender to slot inside for Jomo
Gordon to hit goalwards at the near post but custodian Earle
again was equal to the task. The corner that followed was
side-footed in by Luton Shelton after 37 minutes. Then after
being provider in the first Craig Stewart returned to score
after his 20 yard spot kick went in when deflected of the head
of a defender in the wall at the 76th minute.
Then the game changed – both
teams made three attacking changes quickly, Harbour View
continued to miss at least six simple goals while Village
putting extra players forward in search of a goal that
eventually came from Gregory Simpson who headed home from a
right sided square. With eight more minutes remaining in the
game Village continued to double-team the flank and the parry
from goalkeeper Grey was met by another lurking midfielder Ian
McAnuff who slammed home twice in minutes 88 and 90 from
similar plays as Village United celebrated the victory Harbour
View looked in a daze after surrendering valuable points, the
game and the leadership of the Premier League as the New Year
comes around.
HARBOUR
VIEW OVERTURNS ARNETT GARDENS 3-2, TO STAY ON TOP AS THE
CHRISTMAS SEASON ARRIVES !!
A Hatrick of goals by Fabian
Taylor was a perfect Christmas present for the long-suffering
fans.
When the third goal was scored
in the 63rd minute Fabian Taylor must have felt a relieved man
as he celebrated his first hatrick of the season, but the
Harbour View fans joy would herald a rare victory over recent
nemises Arnett Gardens just days ahead of the yuletide season
and oh,oh,oh what a Merry Christmas it was.
Top of the table jointly with
Waterhouse on 34 points, joint third place in the second round
with 10 points and getting our second victory of the round
while remaining the only undefeated team in this round, made
it all the more reason to celebrate.
The game was a very evenly
contested one throughout as both teams seeked the early goal
it was the intensity of Robert Scarlett’s run down the left
flank after being released by Jermaine Hue that set up a
pinpoint square for the lounging header from Fabian Taylor to
find its mark as it crept agonisingly inside of the far post
after 18th minute.
The fleet-footed Jonathan
Williams quickly shunted a pass to the nimble Kwame Richardson
to repeat his goalscoring feat of the first game this was soon
followed by the veteran Denton Shedden latching onto a Keith
Kelly slider to register the second eight minutes before
halftime for a 2-1 lead to Arnett at the break.
The second half was all
about the class of Fabian Taylor.
With just six minutes on the
clock he muffed what seemed a simple chance to level the score
when Scarlett’s bullet like square hit him after flashing by
his marking defender to be parried for a left-sided corner
kick by goalkeeper Selvyn Collins. The resulting kick
defelcted from a bunch of defenders to the unmarked marksman
at the far post as he obliged by ramming home a thunderous
drive from 12 yards into the back of the net.
Five minutes later he popped up
again, this time out jumping the sweeper to nod home another
Scarlett square out of the reach of Collins to his far post to
win the memorable game by 3-2.
Then seemingly distracted by
the constant indecision of the referee he firstly in his role
of captain questioned the assistants’ call for a foul
committed two yards from him then a minute later was again
cautioned for what seemed a harmless tackle at the centre of
the field. As he departed so too the game subsided in interest
as Harbour View closed down its attacks and prevented any
serious attacks by the now deflated Arnett Gardens team.
INTREGING DRAW AT THE COMPOUND AS 2002 CHAMPIONS SQUARE OFF
0-0.
The
availability of many national players on both sides for
reigning Premier League Champions Portmore United and
Federation Knockout Champions Harbour View never produced
goals but did give the fair sized crowd a lot of quality
football to watch as the Christmas season approaches. Visiting
Harbour View residents from the USA graced our presence with
the likes of Damani Ralph the “MLS Rookie of the Year” Wolde
Harris of the Kansas City Wizards who finished fourth in the
League and the energetic twin sister of coach Donovan Hayles,
Lisa, her husband Bill and son Craig, Western Sports owner
Carl Chang also made a rare appearance – all the best for the
season.
Stand-in Harbour View Captain
always threatened to score from early on as he circled the
Portmore penalty area like a predator seeking his prey. His
rasping 18 yard drive was excellently handled by the ever
competent Shawn Sawyers in goal who tipped it over the
crossbar for a corner, the resulting Jermaine Hue was met by
the diving header from Lovell Palmer but deflected off a
defender for the first of two more corner kicks that was
scrambled out of the danger area. Fabian shot wide of the mark
when his one-timer from a Conrad Hunte square was miscued from
the left side of the box 15 yards out.
The lead role of former Premier
League record goalscorer Oniel McDonald made little impact as
he and his teammates fired speculate shots only from the
midfield area seemingly with measured confidence that never
troubled A half chance by the towering centre forward Dwayne
Peters drifted wide as sweeper William Richards tried to play
him offside on top of the box.
The
first half ended much like the pattern of the game throughout
with good midfield play by both teams both countered by
defensive alertness marshalled the custodians Leeroy Grey and
Shawn Sawyers. However the habit of stopping the ground
advances of the Harbour View playmakers by way of fouls
brought out the yellow card distribution of FIFA Referee
Hughill Thompson once too often as he issued a Red Card to
Jermaine Benjamin in minute 78 for a foul on young Conrad
Hunte just about the halfline. The fouls produced many
freekicks from Jermaine Hue just outside the area but
defensive wall was more successful at blocking than was the
kicks threatening save for one beauty the shaved the outside
of the far upright. His best effort from 17 yards out was hit
straight at the head of Sawyers who was quite pleased to parry
over the bar for one of five corners throughout the game.
The full slate of chances
failed to alter the scoreline as the intense football tactics
ruled over individual brilliance both teams left without
losing a though not wanting to admit it would feel satisfied
as they look forward to the next round of games.
The Under 21 game ended with
Portmore United winning by 2-1 as a double by Shawn Tavares
bettered the solo effort of league leading goalscorer Kemar
Petrekin.
