A stunning performance from the
“Stars of the East” in the first of two semifinals yesterday
at the Waterhouse stadium moved the Harbour View and Portmore
United into a repeat appearance to last years competition.
Defending Champions Portmore United defeated Arnett Gardens in
the second semifinal by 2-1.
Bolstered by the inclusion of
four of our eight senior team representatives in Jermaine
Taylor, Luton Shelton, Lovell, Palmer and Marcelino Blackburn
the lead was established when Petrekin beat the defence to
release Shelton to round the Tivoli goalkeeper Kevin Graham
after 44 minutes. Before that Anthony Christie and Shelton
missed a sitters and Graham saved good attempts from
Christie’s and Blackburn freekicks.
The second half opened with
more enterprise as Shelton scored from a Blackburn left sided
freekick with a well placed header after 55 minutes. Petrekin
then weighed in with a double strike after Shelton outwitted
the defence to feed his strike partner with a simple tap in
after 70 minutes he then doubled his account when he
capitalised on a defensive error to score three minutes later,
making it 4-0. He would miss the hatrick when he beat the
goalkeeper before hitting the upright to go behind.
Not to be denied, Shelton
pressured the confussed Tivoli defence into error when he
displaced a defender to before scoring and celebrating. Tivoli
fought on to score through Horace Howell from a Lenworth Hyde
Jr. pass after 83 minutes.

pass inside the box |
Two second half goals from
Craig Stewart in the 62nd minute and Luton Shelton in the 76th
minute capped of a concentrated effort by the “Stars of the
East” to end the round on 18 points in fourth position.
Wadadah showing improved
teamplay and some senior players like Daniel Ricketts
displaying sparks of brilliance but not enough to bother the
better organised team lead into attack by Jermaine Hue whose
two strikes at goal were hurriedly handled by the custodian.
Lovell Palmer muffed a first half hatrick, Shelton’s blast was
parried by the keeper, Orville Campbell missed and Jomo
Gordon’s hard work never rewarded his talent with a goal to
show.
In the latter stage young
Marcelino Blackburn added energy and good attacking skills
assisted by fellow substitutes Nicholas McCreath and Akeem
Priestley they however could not add to the scoreline.
RED STRIPE CHAMPIONS CUP
KNOCKOUT: 3rd Round
On Wednesday, March 23rd the
newly revamped Red Stripe Champions Cup kicked-off at the
Compound with a third Round knockout game against Portland
Champions St. George’s United former club of National Under 20
Captain Jermaine Taylor, whose younger brother Ricardo, leads
playing at centre half.
A closely contested game was
opened to goalscoring when Damion Stewart committed a foul on
an attacker inside the penalty area. The quickly rewarded
penalty was converted by goalkeeper Randal Huie to lead 1-0 at
halftime.
The superior team strategy in
the second half was soon to pay dividends as goals produced by
Jomo Gordon and Luton Shelton, from headers to Orville
Campbell squares put the game beyond St George’s, Akeem
Priestley failed to capitalise on an empty goal from 8 yards
out in minute 86.
The return leg takes place on
Wednesday April 6th in Portland.
HARBOUR VIEW LEADS BUT LOSE 1-2 TO DC UNITED IN CONCACAF
RETURN LEG!
Veteran
defender Donald “Foulie” Stewart headed the “Stars of the
East” into the lead at the stroke of halftime from a Jermaine
Hue freekick, raising hopes for the home team by going to the
halftime break leading 1-0.
The good ball possession by the
visitors from Washington thrilled the large crowd as the hosts
responded in kind adding deft ball artistry to the menu for a
delightful exhibition of professional football. Tight ball
control dominated play as both goalkeepers were called upon to
make good saves particularly Leighton Murray in the first half
then Nick Rimando in the second.
The better second half midfield
organisation lead by Jaime Moreno moved the ball into attack
with regularity before their sharper finishing on goal in
minutes seventy four (74) and seventy seven (77) broke the
game wide open in favour of DC United. The left-sided buildup
was swung inside for the flashing header by substitute Jamil
Walker to deflect to the far post and equalise the game. The
second was a classic Moreno moment as a right-sided approach
play was collected just outside the penalty box, he stalled
before expertly chipping both defenders and goalkeeper to the
left with a swerving left footer inside the far post. The lead
reverting to DC United taking a 2-1 lead.
The crowd stayed riveted to the
game as Harbour View hurried the changes of McCreath and
Blackburn for Gordon and Richards, soon 19 year old Akeem
Priestley made his entrance for Donald Stewart. They added
life and spice to the game quickly drawing fouls, one of which
Jermaine Hue’s 23 yard drive brought out a good save by
custodian Rimando tipping it over for a corner, then
McCreath’s control in the box and shot goalwards but straight
at goalkeeper Rimando.
In the end superior finishing
meant DC United advance to the semifinals of the CONCACAF
CHAMPION’S CUP next month. Harbour View Fc continues its
advance in the local Premier League in an effort to win and in
so doing, repeat qualification for the next International
season.
WELL DONE
EVERYONE!
