HVFC'S KNVB COACHING SYMPOSIUM A BIG HIT
Coach Bertram Scott

The "Advance Level Match Analysis & Tactics" Royal Netherlands Football Association Academy (KNVB) Coaching Symposium hosted by the Harbour View Football Club (HVFC) on October 16-19 was a tremendous success as it was attended by some of the brightest minds in Jamaican football including ten coaches from the Cash Plus National Premier League. Conducted by KNVB Dutch football Instructor, Franc Meijerman, and assisted by Kenneth Jaliens, the National Coach of Suriname, the course was built around the Dutch concept of "Total Football". Franc Meijeman is a graduate of the Royal Netherlands Football Association Academy, and is an instructor in conditioning, and international projects.

After opening remarks by Carvel Stewart, the Chairman of HVFC, and Clyde Jureidini, the General Manager of HVFC, the Symposium kicked-off with an introductory understanding of the "The Dutch vision on Football" developed by legendary Holland national coach, Rinus Michels. Michels unleashed "total football" at the 1974 FIFA World Cup Final in Germany as the Dutch national team, led by the great Yohan Cruff, Johan Neeskens, Johhny Rep, among other memorable names, suffered a heart broken 2-1 defeat and a second place finish to World Champions Germany. The "total football" strategy "fostered team coherence and individual imagination - with all players possessing the skills to play in any part of the pitch." Under the highly efficient principles of total football, players rotated in and out of defense at will, and were encouraged to play creative and attacking football.

The course next examined "system of play", and looked mainly at four systems of play; 1-4-4-2, 1-4-3-3, 1-5-3-2, and 1-3-5-2. Instructor Meijerman explained that the aim of each system of play was to win and create clarity, but that these systems are created by "culture, historical knowledge and experience, the quality of the players, and, of course, chance." The Instructor also explained that "there was no ideal system of play, and that every system depended on the structure and vision of the club, and its coach, the quality of the players, the finances of the club, the result of the games, the team's way of playing, and the club's position in the competition."

At the end of day one, examples of "Training Practices" from systems of play were looked at both theoretically, and later practically, with the help of the Harbour View U-18 teams. The twenty-eight coaches that attended the course were divided into groups and sub-groups, and given the responsibility of managing, coaching, and analyzing the tactical performance of the HVFC U-18 teams. As a part of their duties, the coaches were asked to construct diagrams explaining the tactical transition of attack to defense, and vice-versa. The local coaches responded well to the task set by Instructor Meijerman, both in the classroom and on the field, with Andrew "Bowa" Hines of HVFC producing perhaps the most instructive of the diagrams.

Day two focused mainly on the principles of training, while day three explained that "conditioning=football training", and discussed the various "Methods of Match Analysis". On the final day of the well received symposium, the enthusiastic coaches displayed their communication skills by making presentations of match analysis of a game between a Jamaica U-21 team and the HVFC U18 team.

In his closing remarks, Instructor Meijerman emphasized the importance of further high level football education by Jamaican coaches, and encouraged the attendees to go forth and skillfully impart their newly acquired knowledge far and wide to assist in the further development of the game across Jamaica. The presentations followed with the coaches each receiving their very attractive KNVB Certificate endorsed by Jeu Sprengers, the Chairman of the Royal Netherlands Football Association Academy. All twenty-eight coaches were also presented with a gift bag which included T-shirts from sponsor Lucozade, and a very invaluable tactical clipboard with maker for match analysis. Howard "Max" Straw of Arnett Gardens, and Glendon "Admiral Bailey of Tivoli Gardens both received special gifts from Franc Meijerman for being the two most outstanding coaches of the symposium, and Ann-Marie Massey, the HVFC premier league team Manager, presented a set of Harbour View FC gears to Instructor Meijerman and Kenneth Jaliens in appreciation for their services.

With Jamaica a few months away from the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, a coaching course of this level was timely, and underscored the need for more football educational opportunities of that nature not just by conscientious clubs like Harbour View FC, but particularly by the governing body of the sport, the JFF, and the respective confederations across the Island. Already HVFC has announced their plans to repeat the KNVB Symposium in early 2008.

The coaches in who attended the Symposium were: Duane Atkinson, Glendon Bailey (Tivoli Gardens FC), Patrick Barclay (St. Thomas Football Association), Ludlow Bernard (HVFC), Wayne Brackett (St. James Football Association), Barrington Brown, Junior Brown (Trelawny Football Association), Llewellyn Brown (St. Thomas Football Association), Mark Buckland (ISSA), Alrik Clarke (KSAFA), Linval Dixon (Portmore United FC), Norman Foster (Seba United FC), Michael Haye (St. Catherine Football Association), Braxton Hyre ( St. Georeg's FC), David Laylor (August Town FC), Calvin Lewis (Police National FC), Owen Nelson (KSAFA), Patrick Nunes (St. Thomas Football Association), Andrew Price (Boy's Town FC), Garfield Robinson (Clarendon Football Association), Kerry Samuels (Trelawny Football Association), Bertram Scott (KSAMLA), Howard Straw (Arnett Gardens FC), Harold Thomas (HVFC), Charles Wilks (St. Mary Football Association), James Williams (Barbican FC), Christopher Bender, and Julio Cesar Moreno Yanez. The Symposium was sponsored by Lucozade, Locker Room Sports, Air Jamaica, the St. Thomas Cooperative Credit Union, and The Reggae Boyz Fan Club.
